Creation of Private Groups Similar to Facebook

Paul Smith Posted in Component Development 2 months ago

If using OSSN:
OSSN version: 8.9 Free
Website URL (optional):

If facing any bug:
PHP Version : 8.2
Error Log if any:
Browser: Chrome/Firefox
OS (Window/Linux/Android/iOS/Mac): 11

Is it possible to create a private (invite only) component that overrides the closed option when creating a new group? Something like FB allows is what I am seeking. I've tried a lot of different things (too many to list) but nothing is working for me and just wanted some direction on if this is possible and maybe some steps provided as to how I may make it work.

Thank you for your time.

hope to explain it good.
user meesit made an private group post, not visible for user redegelde

but user Cath does see this post on the timeline
And this is NOT good

Both users are not Friends, related etc or moderator/admin

Okay, just to clarify: Paul is requesting a new kind of PRIVATE group which would be visible only for those users who have been formerly invited by the group owner like

But this type of group is currently not implemented in Ossn, only the latter two ones

I cannot reproduce these strange effects of CLOSED groups discussed here, though. When entering a closed group my view is:

No postings and no way to even comment.

I logged in to Eric's site yesterday and tried to access several closed groups I'm not a member of: No way, everything's working a expected.

Perhaps Eric has a chance to verify in which way these 3 mentioned members are different?

And perhaps it makes sense to temporary disable all membership and group enhancement components which may have an impact on privileges...

Michael, yes I got those results while logged in as a new test user. Set up 3 different test user accounts and all can see each others closed group, Haven't asked the other members to test yet as I don't want them to abandon the website yet.

I am pretty close to getting a component to work but now I am wondering if I should continue if Eric confirms something similar may be happening with his site also.

For the record this a site for my family that I rebuilt from previous platform that they abandoned a while back as they seem to be addicted to FB. So far those that have come back say they like what they see so I will keep plodding along.

And thanks for the replies much appreciated.

Okay. This rings the bell.
Got same. Closed group not visible for my test user. But three members they see it and can react. Found it so Strange

Paul,
can you confirm you got these results while being logged in as a NORMAL user (no adminstrator, nor moderator privileges)?!?

Note that adminstrators may view ANY content.

Hi Maurice, thanks for your reply. The problem as I see it, is when a new group is added by a logged in member and the closed group option is chosen, all logged in members can view and comment in it. I wanted a private group (invite only) option where only invited members can view and comment in that specific group. This way not all logged in members can participate in the private group (invite only) . Hope this clarifies things better.

The closed group is the private group.
