okay

Hi, I’ve run into a stubborn theme issue and I’m wondering if you can point me in the right direction.

I’m building a custom theme derived from GoBlue. In the left sidebar, the menu items for News Feed, Friends, Photos and Notifications show small square placeholder characters before the text.

I first assumed it was a Font Awesome issue, so I explicitly set the FA font-family and later even replaced those pseudo-icons with CSS/SVG mask icons. The squares still remain.

That makes me think these characters may not actually come from my theme CSS, but from the menu item label or markup generated by OSSN itself.

Do you know where those leading icons/characters for the main sidebar menu items are added in GoBlue/OSSN?

For example, the rendered items effectively look like:

□ News Feed
□ Friends
□ Photos
□ Notifications

while other menu items such as Groups, Marketplace and Tools render their icons correctly.

Is there a recommended way for a custom theme to override or remove those default sidebar icons without changing core/component files?

Thanks!

Looks nice, you can easily override component pages too by just copy components/(name)/plugins/default/ to your theme/plugins/default

That is general problem with responsive design it breaks on one device works on other.

Haha, apparently it’s not only quiet in the software industry the users have gone into power-saving mode too. 😄

I’m working on my own OSSN theme at the moment. And wow… components suddenly feel easy. 😂

Building a theme is a real pain in the ass: fix desktop, break mobile; fix mobile, discover another breakpoint; resize the browser and something decides to disappear.

But that’s also what makes it fun. It’s definitely a bigger challenge than building a component and I’m slowly winning the fight. 😎
