Is there a way to make content public (guest/no login)?

Side note: I wish there was a way to search discussions to see if a question was asked before.

I installed OSSN 5.0 and made a few sample posts. Is there a way to make content public so that people don't have to login? I'm looking to setup something so that the homepage is visible, and people register/login to join the conversation.

I'm still not sure exactly what you're looking for, but if you need some custom work done (eg component development or custom ossn mods) you can feel free to email me (contact info my profile). I'm one of several people on here who do (paid) custom mods and components for ossn.

There's a free search component here which searches posts on your OSSN site: https://www.opensource-socialnetwork.org/component/view/3308/search-posts

if by 'discussions' you meant threads on this forum, there's a search box in the bottom right hand corner.

I'm not sure about Ossn5 but in previous versions, I believe all content was public by default, there's some particular setting you have to set to make it so that only members can do things like view user profiles, etc.

I want discussions on my OSSN site to be visible to people that are not logged in.
