Is there an option for multi tenancy? I would like to have different groups using the same instance of OSSN but fence them off to their realm.

This is not possible further it is outside the scope of OSSN :) You can not run multiple OSSN sites on single source and single database.
Due to the many requests in the past for additonal features and components we have decided to develope a premium version. Features like Hashtags, Videos, Polls, Events, Stories, Link Preview, etc included in it.
