I managed to lose the contents of my main database (without a backup :( )whilst trying to create a mirror development database. I find myself with the software on the server and getting error 500 when I navigate to it.

Ok glad that you resolved your issue, please take backups next time it will save you from this hurdle, if you are on VPS make a snapshot before changes.

The word I used was "mirror", not "minor". I wanted to use the second database on the same machine for development use away from the live system.

What is minor database development? Please don't try to customize database.
Your solution is only re-installation from scratch. Delete everything from your hosting and re-install.
