Changing signup text not taking

Mick Dawlings Posted in Technical Support 2 months ago

I'm using the White theme and have the hello world component installed to change main site text.
All of the changes are working but two.

'home:top:heading' => "Welcome to %s! Join now to make new friends, create groups, add photos, and much more.",
'home:top:sub:heading' => "Join now to make new friends, create groups, add photos, and much more.",

I tried both because neither one is working.
I've added these into the hello world, flushed the cache but the text never updates on the top page.

I have changed things using the goblue theme on another site and that's working fine.

The font size question is here; https://www.opensource-socialnetwork.org/discussion/view/6760/goblue-theme-fonts-change. I mentioned fonts here since it's something I am having to work with and we are talking about the different components.

If you think it's confusing for members, I'm one of those :). Anyhow, sure, I can try to post separately forum issues.
I do use tags to try and help those searching too.

I am sorry Mick but i am getting confused. If it works then leave it.

This answer is confusing to me :).
If it works leave them but that doesn't explain why it works in one component but not the other using the same variables. To work on this, I'm trying to better understand what I need.

I don't want to have to hire people to help right from the start. I'd like to get this mostly running first, and once up, then I'll look at what it will take to find someone, either your team (still waiting for a reply on that ticket) or a freelancer.

Now in your last reply you sre asking fontsize.
No, I mentioned it saying I'm not sure how to do that and now we're talking about different components. Forget about that in this topic, that question is in the other topic.

Your initial topic id about home:top:.... strings and I already answered fhe solution

So far, there is no answer. You only said if it works then leave it. That doesn't answer why I would specifically need the hello world component vs the custom scripts one.

Regarding front size please open different thread and if already opened update that thread with
screenshot so we know exactly you wish to update

It's simple, the font size, it's too small in the goblue theme. I'll update that thread next so we don't have to talk about it here and get more confusion.

May i ask you to keep forum related issues (editing time-outs, image uploads, etc.) separate from Ossn issues. Searching for a specific term or topic and then getting a mess like this isn't useful nor motivating especially for newbies.

Perhaps an example can help me.

These are what I put into the hello world component that was suggested to me the first time I asked about changing text.

'bpage', 'video:com:maxfilesize' , 'video:com:formats', 'video:com:uploadtime', 'page:error:text', 'user:account:validated'.

As mentioned, I also want to change the font size in the goblue theme. How, not sure yet.

Should all of those be put into the scripts component instead then?

When you see edit page and while typing seems 5 minutes already passed. So i suggest you to write a reply and then read and if you think its wrong simply edit before posting.

Custom string components you need to use when you want to override language strings.

Yes it worked with hello world but some strings may not work with hello world like theme strings so that is why we told you to use above component. Regarding last question you used same value for both strings. I don't see anything wrong here.

It is hard to explain why? because its all relates to program.

I'm replying as someone replies to me and editing if I see I can improve something I'm trying to explain.
Also, I shared a screen shot of this site going nuts. I hope it helps.

Custom strings should be used to override the strings.
Hello world is when you have own strings not to override.

Sorry, this is not clear to me yet. You mention one to override, the other not to override.

If I don't need to override, then why would I do anything?

As mentioned;
For the two lines I shared, this works on the goblue theme site with hello world.
On the other site using the white theme, I had to use the custom scripts which works.

In both cases, I used the same values yet two different outcomes.

'home:top:heading' and 'home:top:sub:heading'

You are making replies too fast or too long replies please make it simple and don't add other reply so fast. To avoid the spam we have these restrictions.

It's very frustrating that the site keeps letting me edit then tells me I cannot edit anymore AFTER I've written a lot of text. Why not simply allow people to edit? I end up having to create a bunch of comments when I could simply edit one.
This time, your site went nuts again.

I was trying to ask this.

It is not clear to me when to use certain components.
For the two lines I shared, this works on the goblue theme site with hello world.
On the other site using the white theme, I had to use the custom scripts which works.

How do I know when to use which?

For example, the goblue fonts and size are much too small on the left menu. What should I use to make those larger?

us Mick Dawlings Replied 2 months ago

I moved those lines to the custom strings and now this works.

I thought I was starting to understand the basics but too often when asking questions, I'm told to use a component. I'm not really understanding this yet or how to decide when I need one or which. Now I have three suggested and not really clear which I should be using for what.

How do I know when to use 'hello world' or custo-strings or even the customs-css-js components? All three have been suggested in replies to some of my questions.

Also, why does 'hello world' work fine for the same changes but when using the goblue theme?
